Summary : |
|
This Cortes Island acreage offers expansive oceanfront with 180 degree views. It is immediately east of Teakerne Arm on West Redonda Island.
The property totals 167 acres with over three quarters of a mile of low bank easy access oceanfront. The beach is a mix of small rock, gravel and sand. The property has been logged with a strip of trees remaining along the shoreline, and other large treed areas close to the shore and at higher elevations. The topography is varied, fairly level and gradual near the beach and sloping more steeply toward the rear where the property climbs to an elevation of approximately 900 ft.
A good quality gravel road parallels the shoreline, originating at the waterfront on the south end where there is a good landing suitable for loading equipment and materials. This road runs across the lower portion of the property providing relatively easy access to a number of building sites along the shoreline.
This is one of only two private properties on the Lewis Channel side of Cortes Island. This is a boat access only property with relatively quick easy access from four locations, some of which provide road links, ferry access and the availability of services. Approximately 5 miles away in Squirrel Cove there is a general store with fuel sales, a post office and road access with ferry connections to Quadra Island and the full service community of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Refuge Cove on West Redonda Island is also within the same distance where there is a general store, fuel sales and a post office. Access to and from the Sunshine Coast and the communities of Lund and Powell River are approximately 10 and 14 miles respectively south east of the property.

In the summer, Cortes Islanders swim in the warm waters of Hague Lake and Smelt Bay, or hike the dense forests by Carrington Bay and Hank's Beach. From hilltops like Easter Bluff, hikers are rewarded with sensational views of the mainland Coast Range, towering above the myriad channels and islands of Desolation Sound. Cortes' location in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island promises consistent summer sun, especially on the southern end of the island, where Arbutus and Manzanita trees cling to the bleached granite bluffs.
Adjacent to Desolation Sound, one of BC’s foremost cruising destinations, Cortes offers excellent facilities for yachts and kayakers, a base from which to explore areas of remote, unsurpassed beauty where rugged mountains meet the sea.

Cortes Island (population of 550) is situated opposite West Redonda Island. It has a good road system that links residents in settlements such as Squirrel Cove, Cortes Bay, Manson’s Landing, Gorge Harbour and Whaletown. From Whaletown it is possible to reach Vancouver Island by ferry, first to Heriot Bay on the east side of Quadra Island, and then from Quathiaski Cove on Quadra’s west side to Campbell River on Vancouver Island.
Cortes Bay, located on the southeast side of Cortes Island, is 3.5 miles west of Sarah Point. It has a public float, anchorage and a private yacht club outstation open to members only. The latter is the converted Cortes Bay Marina, which has not been in operation for several years. The narrow entrance has a beacon with a flashing light marking it.
Squirrel Cove is about 3 miles west of Refuge Cove. The Squirrel Cove Store adjacent to the floats has a good stock of groceries, a liquor store and propane.
Cortes Island is 125 square km at the entrance to Desolation Sound, one of BC’s most celebrated cruising areas. It has an intricate shoreline with sheltered harbours, islets and coves. Squirrel Cove on the east side is a well-known anchorage with a small tidal waterfall. Gorge Harbour is a large sheltered cove entered through a narrow channel flanked by steep cliffs.
