Pemberton Tucked beyond the Coast Mountains north of Whistler lies Pemberton Valley, a green pocket of agricultural land widely known for its seed potatoes and affectionately dubbed "Spud Valley" by locals. Horses and cattle can be seen grazing next to the village. Visitors remark upon the quiet country atmosphere and the beauty of this stretch of peaceful farmland, sheltered all around by majestic snow-capped peaks. Pemberton sits in a wide valley surrounded by mountains, which makes it consistently warmer than Whistler. The most prominent feature in the valley is the looming presence of the 8,000 ft Mount Currie. Pemberton is an agriculturally and recreationally rich valley surrounded by spectacular alpine, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Farming has been the traditional industry of the Pemberton Valley and continues to be a significant contributor to the local economy. The storefronts of the tiny downtown, just a couple of square blocks, have an old west look like the set of a John Wayne movie. Pemberton has plenty of amenities like a community centre, library, hospital, pharmacy, banks, elementary & high schools, groceries, restaurants, a train station and even an airport with a runway long enough to handle commuter sized planes and private jets. Just east of Mount Currie lies the busy heart of the Mount Currie Reserve of the Lil'wat group of the Stl'atl'lmx Nation. Pemberton is a year round recreational playground that offers something for everyone. Some of BC’s best cross country and downhill mountain biking trails are found in the back yard. There is a back country mecca of premier skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling as well as a highly acclaimed provincial moto cross track. Not one, but two prestigious golf courses, a parasailing club that launches off the local cliffs, numerous horse trails and equestrian centers, kayaking and canoeing in the local rivers, a skateboard park & pump track, a plethora of hiking trails found in nearby Provincial Parks as well as cottage and boating communities at nearby lakes. Meagre Creek Hot Springs, located 65 km northwest of Pemberton, is the largest non-commercial hot springs in southern BC. The hot springs waters are clear, odourless and tasteless, and are located at the mouth of Meagre Creek. Joffre Lakes Provincial Park is located 30 minutes north of Pemberton. Glacier laden peaks are visible from the parking lot. This hiking circuit goes through the Coast Mountain range and showcases jagged peaks, ice fields, cold rushing streams and turquoise blue lakes. All three lakes are located along the trail and each is more stunning than the last. At the end of the trail, you find yourself at the bottom of the spectacular Matier Glacier. Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park is an hour's drive north near D'Arcy. It has mountain-biking trails, paddling and fishing options on the lake. Nairn Falls Provincial Park is located just south of Pemberton and features captivating views. As it flows through the park, the Green River carves its way through a mass of granite at the foot of Mount Currie. Having picked up volume from the Soo River and Rutherford Creek on its way from Green Lake in Whistler, it swirls and crashes its way along until it reaches a fracture in the granite. Suddenly, its broad shape is transformed into a thundering column of white water as it drops 60 m (197 ft) at Nairn Falls. Emerald green glacier waters roar 60 metres into a steep, forested valley of Douglas fir, cedar and hemlock. As abruptly as the theatrics begin, the river reverts to its former character and hurries on towards Lillooet Lake. Unlike Shannon Falls & Brandywine Falls, Nairn Falls does not drop down a sheer pathway but instead boils through several frothy cauldrons that are hypnotic to watch. Whistler The resort destination of Whistler is nestled below Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in the Whistler Valley, 1½ hours north of Vancouver, BC. In recognition of its world-class ski resort status, the cosmopolitan Village of Whistler co-hosted the 2010 Winter Olympic Games with Vancouver. For the past decade, Whistler continues to be recognized as the Top Ski Resort in North America. Something magical happens when you arrive at the summit of the small valley that contains Whistler. A cluster of small lakes is gathered here, reflecting the outlines of the mountains high above. When you let your eyes rise from the reflections to admire the real thing, the contours of the ski runs on Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains pattern the forested slopes. Above the tree line, you can still see remnants of the most recent ice age in the glaciers that encrust the highest peaks. Central to everything in the resort is Whistler Village, with its shopping areas and après-ski restaurants bordered by squeaky-clean streets. The skiing is... well... maybe the best anywhere! Whistler and Blackcomb mountains rise up a mile out of the valley (1,609 m/5,280 ft) and access over 7,000 acres of prime mountain terrain - including 12 alpine bowls, 3 glaciers and more than 200 runs with 33 ski lifts combined - offering the greatest vertical drop on the continent and the highest lift access at 2,284 m /7,494 ft. Whistler is now just as popular in the summer as it is in the winter. Whistler Mountain caters to the downhill mountain bike scene. Bikers from around the world come to experience this world class bike park. And of course there are plenty of golf courses designed by world renowned professional golfers, breathtaking alpine hiking and pretty much any summer activity you can imagine! |
