Qualicum Beach is a charming, friendly, retirement community located on the south-central coast of eastern Vancouver Island. It has a population of approximately 8,900 people and is a 40 minute drive northwest of Nanaimo. Its quaint village atmosphere, museums, gardens and fabulous beaches make it a popular tourist destination. The community is serviced by the Island Highway, a daily train, airport and nearby ferry to Lasqueti Island.

Qualicum Beach has over 4 km of curving, sandy beaches and when the tide is high, you can stay dry by utilizing the paved promenade, which is lined with picnic tables, shade trees, a change room and lots of parking. There is a public boat ramp along the waterfront, as well as public washrooms and a privately-run concession stand. At the west end of the waterfront is a viewing area perfect for bird watching or taking photographs.

History :

The Qualicum Beach area was first inhabited by First Nations' Coast Salish peoples. The word "Qualicum" is an anglicized version of the Salish word "sqal-li" which means "where the dog salmon run." Thomas Kincade and his family were the first Europeans to settle in the area and in 1878, they built a log home near the mouth of Little Qualicum River. Today, that home is known as the Marshall-Stevenson Federal Wildlife Preserve building and it still stands, but is not open to the public.

The Qualicum Beach area was sparsely populated until 1914, when rail service arrived. The Canadian Pacific Railway extended its Victoria-Nanaimo service all the way up island to Courtenay, which boosted the tourist trade. Today, the heritage train station at First Avenue and Beach Road continues to bring in tourists.

The railway spurred construction of the Qualicum Beach Hotel, which was initially used as a hospital for First World War veterans. Many famous people stayed at that hotel until it was sold to a developer in 1969 and replaced with private homes. One of the oldest resorts still operating today is the Buena Vista by the Sea, which was built in 1937.

Qualicum Beach was incorporated as a village in 1942 with just 304 full-time residents. The population continued to grow and reached 1,000 people in 1966 and 3,000 in January 1983, when the village officially became a town.
