Area Data :

Mayne Island is a small, friendly, Canadian island positioned about half way between the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and Vancouver Island. The natural beauty of Mayne Island comes from a combination of picturesque seascapes, pastoral farmlands and rich west coast forest. The weather is moderate, much dryer than Vancouver and almost always pleasant.

Mayne Island is nestled among the Southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia's Georgia Strait about midway between Victoria and Vancouver, just below the 49th parallel. The island covers an area of approximately 25 square miles with a population of approximately 900 full time residents. During the summer season the population grows to about 3,000. The island has a health care centre, volunteer fire department, an elementary school with playground, public tennis courts, service station, ambulance service, post office, and a surprisingly large variety of businesses for a small island.

Rolling orchards and warm rock-strewn beaches abound on Mayne Island, a rustic 21 square kilometre island in the Southern Gulf Islands chain of British Columbia. This friendly island midway between the Lower Mainland of BC and Vancouver Island is small enough for a day trip, but pretty enough for a lifetime. The natural beauty of Mayne Island offers picturesque seascapes, pastoral farmlands and rich west coast forest. Drop by the lighthouse, watch the frantic activity as fishermen wait until the last minute to get out of the ferry's way in Active Pass, or stroll up to the top of Mayne's mountain for a view of the Strait of Georgia - and you'll begin to discover what Mayne is all about.

Miners Bay, the island's commercial centre, and nearby Active Pass still throb with a steady stream of marine traffic, a bustling contrast to the island's quiet interior byways. Village Bay, with its BC Ferries terminal, has several late 1800s to 1930s buildings to intrigue the history buff. Active Pass is named after the American survey ship USS Active, the first steam vessel to navigate the pass.

History :

Captain George Richards of the Royal Navy surveyed the area aboard his vessel HMS Plumper in 1857, naming the island after his lieutenant, Richard Charles Mayne. During the Cariboo and Fraser River Gold Rush of the mid-1800s, Vancouver Island miners gathered on Mayne Island before rowing across Georgia Strait to the mainland of BC in search of their fortunes. The earliest homesteaders registered land claims in the Miners Bay area in 1859.

Canadian Pacific Railway Ferries originally stopped at Miners Bay in Active Pass, dating back to the early 1900s when Mayne Island became an important stop over point for miners traveling north from Victoria to the Fraser River and the Caribou Gold Rush. Later the ferry dock was moved to Village Bay, a "village" in name only. Miners Bay is actually the village, and the island's business centre, with many historical buildings and commercial outlets.

Several heritage buildings are also worth a visit: Plumper Pass museum, St. Mary Magdalene Church and Active Pass light station. Across from the museum is the Agricultural Hall, built ca. 1900 and the site of the oldest fall fair in the Gulf Islands.
