Cowichan River
The Cowichan River is a moderately sized river in British Columbia, Canada. It originates in Cowichan Lake, flowing east towards its end at Cowichan Bay. Its drainage basin is 795 square kilometres (307 sq mi) in size.

Shortly after exiting Cowichan Lake, the river drops over Skutz Falls, a small waterfall that is often visited when fish are climbing the fish ladder constructed beside the falls. Below the falls, in the summer time, are some great swimming areas. A ways downstream the river flows through Marie Canyon, a popular kayaking run.

Fishing
The river is widely considered one of the finest trout fishing streams in British Columbia. The Cowichan has an eco-system unique for Vancouver Island and most coastal streams of British Columbia. Unlike many of these streams, the Cowichan has a fine population of insects, crustaceans and annelids. These in turn form a food base for a thriving population of resident trout.

The Cowichan River supports two species of native trout: the rainbow and the cutthroat, and an introduced species: the brown trout stocked originally in the 1930's, the brown trout is surviving and reproducing quite well on its own. Most of the Cowichan's trout are now wild. Besides trout, the Cowichan also supports steelhead and three species of Pacific salmon: Coho, Chinook and chum.

Lake Cowichan
The Town of Lake Cowichan is located at the eastern edge of Cowichan Lake beside the Cowichan River. There are 2,856 people (1996 Census) living in Lake Cowichan

Past Cowichan Lake's eastern shoreline are some of the most spectacular outdoor adventures available on Vancouver Island. From the town, the forests of the Carmanah-Walbarn are only 2 1/2 hours away. Gordon Bay Provincial Park is less than a half-hour away and makes a great place to go camping. The area's temperate climate makes the Cowichan Lake region ideal for outdoor activities all year round.

The town's parks offer plenty of opportunities for picnicking, walking and swimming. Central Park and Saywell Park both offer picnic facilities and are located on the Cowichan River. To take a dip in the Cowichan River, head over to Kinsmen Park (Duck Pond). Other activities awaiting you are tubing, kayaking, horseback riding, houseboat rentals and fishing.
