History : |
The Qualicum Beach area was first inhabited by First Nations' Coast Salish peoples. The word "Qualicum" is an anglicized version of the Salish word "sqal-li" which means "where the dog salmon run." Thomas Kincade and his family were the first Europeans to settle in the area and in 1878, they built a log home near the mouth of Little Qualicum River. Today, that home is known as the Marshall-Stevenson Federal Wildlife Preserve building and it still stands, but is not open to the public. |
