Buckley Bay is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island between Union Bay to the north and Fanny Bay to the south. It is approximately 20 km south of Courtenay and accessible from the old Island Highway 19A and from Exit 101 on the newer Inland Highway 19. BC Ferries operates scheduled ferry services from Buckley Bay to Denman Island and from Denman Island to Hornby Island.
Union Bay is a small seaside community approximately 7 km north of Buckley Bay. From 1888 to 1960, it was a major shipping port for the Union Coal Company mines in Cumberland. Large docks were constructed at Union Bay to accommodate the coal trains and seagoing freighters, and today only a raised rail bed and a few old pilings remain.
Fanny Bay is approximately 4 km south of Buckley Bay and is well known by shellfish lovers and restauranteurs for its oysters. It is home to the world-famous Fanny Bay Oysters, growers, processors and exporters of farm raised Pacific oysters and Manila claims. The Fanny Bay Conservation Unit provides access to the diverse bird life found at Fanny Bay and the surrounding wildlife habitat.
