History:

Rivers Inlet was named by Captain George Vancouver for George Pitt, First Baron Rivers. After the Fraser and Skeena Rivers, Rivers Inlet has the third largest run of salmon in BC. This potential was quickly exploited in the boom of cannery construction in the 1880’s. The first cannery was the Rivers Inlet Cannery, built by Shotbolt Hart and Co., at the mouth of Wannock River. One of the partners was Robert Draney, who later built the Namu cannery. Seventeen more canneries followed over the years, though they did not all operate at the same time. Rivers Inlet became like an extended community, with loggers, trappers, and a few fishermen and cannery watchmen living there through the winter. In the summer it became a hive of activity as everyone worked toward the goal of canning salmon.
