Valdes Island is one of the chain of islands in the Southern Gulf. The island is roughly 40 km southwest of Vancouver across the Strait of Georgia. The island covers an area of approximately 23 square kilometres (9 square miles) and is 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) wide and 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) long. There is no water or electricity on the island.

The island features an excellent array of wildlife. Common marine animals include harbor seals (year-round), Steller and California sea lions (late-August through mid-May), and harbour porpoises, orca, gray and humpback whales (summer months). river otters, black-tailed deer and bald eagles make their home on the island. Bird watchers can spot Wilson's warblers, Pacific-slope flycatchers, black oystercatchers, white-crowned sparrows, bald eagles and great blue herons, as well as other species.
The island is named after Cayetano Valdés y Flores, a Spanish explorer who first came to the region in 1791 as a lieutenant serving under Captain Alessandro Malaspina on the vessel Descubierta. He later returned to the region in 1792 as captain of the topsail schooner Mexicana to explore the area. The island was given its name in 1859 by George Henry Richards, who captained the survey ship HMS Plumper.
