Area Data : | Ocean Falls Ocean Falls is a small community in the Great Bear Rainforest, which is located at the head of Cousins Inlet off Dean Channel, west of Bella Coola in the central coast of BC. The community of 35 to 60 full-time residents and about 100 additional seasonal residents is divided into two neighborhoods, the Townsite on the right and Martin Valley on the left. The road between them is approximately 1.5 km (1 mile) long. There is a hydroelectric dam and waterfall just above the Townsite and you can see just a bit of water above the Townsite. That water is Link Lake, which is 25 km (18 miles) long and has great fresh water fishing. Ocean Falls is not accessible by road, but it can be reached by boat or seaplane. BC Ferries provides passenger and vehicle service to the Central Coast ports of Ocean Falls, Bella Coola, Shearwater, Bella Bella and Klemtu via its Port Hardy to Prince Rupert major route. Flights can also be chartered through Bella Coola Air and Pacific Coastal Seaplane Division. Central Coast The central coast of BC is one of the most breathtaking areas in the world. Misty fjords abound and granite peaks that seem carved from a single stone spring out of the sea to soar a mile high over cold green waters a thousand feet deep. The shoreline is swathed in thick old-growth forest teeming with wildlife. It’s a lot of fun to play in paradise and Ocean Falls is the perfect place to get started. It is tucked snugly away at the end of Cousins Inlet off the Dean Channel, where seals and sea otters play in the bay area year-round and Canada geese and blue heron winter over on the Martin River Delta. Hiking trails fan out from town up the Martin Valley and off to the local lakes. Link Lake, accessible by car or foot, is 29 km (18 miles) of pristine beauty with resident cut-throat trout. On the salt-chuck the fjords are endless and each one is unique. There are whales, seals, dolphins and sea-lions in the water, deer, bears, cougars and wolves on the shore, and squadrons of eagles whirling and soaring amongst the crags. Fresh water streams down ancient stone into the sea everywhere. The eco-system bursts with life from the sea bed to the mountain tops. This is the rainforest at its best! There have been a billion pictures taken of the area and they say that not one of them does it justice. It’s impossible to really know how beautiful it is until you’ve seen it with your own eyes. |

History : | Ocean Falls was named after the impressive waterfall located where Link Lake empties into Cousins Inlet. The spillway from the hydro dam is now a prominent feature at the head of Cousins Inlet. A flourishing pulp mill town since 1909, the closure of the mill in 1980 left the town of Ocean Falls virtually abandoned, with only a small community of residents continuing to live in Martin Valley, a mile down the inlet from the old town site. Today, the remote and beautiful coastal community of Ocean Falls is once again alive. | ||
